France has long been a fashion leader of the world. In the 1860’s the haute couture was established. Paris is one of the main fashion centers of the world. Other leading fashion centers are London, New York, and Milan.
French fashion has always been very original. They pride themselves on being creative and producing one of a kind fashions. The grand French houses of fashion, such as, Chanel and Dior, came into being in the 1860’s.
In 1966 France began it’s manufacturing of clothes to compete with other world fashion designers. Fashion designer Laurent founded a ready to wear line of clothes at that time.
Jean Paul Gaultier is one of my favorite French designers. He didn’t receive any formal training. He got his start in the fashion world by sending his sketches to other fashion stylists. His first collection of clothes was released in 1976. His fashions seemed a little too decadent for this time period, but later have won him world praise for his work.
